From Castets-en-Dorthe to Fronsac/Libourne

Discover the wine region of Aquitaine in between the Garonne, Dordogne and Gironde rivers. You will cycle in a real paradise for wine lovers, surrounded by old manors and countryside castles. Bordeaux, cultural capital city of the region, will welcome you with the elegance of its palaces and above all with its cycle paths, which make it one of the most bike-friendly cities of France.
  • Day by Day

    1. Individual arrival in Castets-en-Dorthe.
Individual arrival and optional bus transfer from the train station at 2:00 p.m. in Bordeaux to the mooring location of the boat near the Canal des Deux Mers at Castets-en-Dorthe. The crew is waiting for you and you will have a first meeting to explain everything there is to know for your cruise. You settle in the cabin. You can try your bike and enjoy a short first test bike ride around Castets, exploring this fertile region aptly named “Little Holland” with its walnut trees, kiwi orchards. In the evening, a welcome cocktail awaits you on board.

    2. Castets-en-Dorthe – Loupiac (30/45 km - 15/30 miles)
After a restful night on board, the first town you will discover by bike is the lovely Saint Macaire and its wonderfull gate and walls. There is opportunity to visit the former residence of the writer Francois Mauriac as well as having your first wine tasting at a château. Riding along korn and sunflower fields you reach La Réole, using an Eiffel style bridge over the river Garonne. This town is famous because in 1190 Richard Lionheart, on his way to the holy Land, gave the town hall building to thank the locals for their loyalty to the English crown. This historical place holds two castles, an impressive church as well as narrow cobbelstoned streets. To end the day you will enjoy the bike path along the “canal de la Garonne” and its deep blue water, built in Napoleon times. You can either go directly back to the ship or ride to Meilhan-sur-Garonne and the amazing scenery it has to offer.

    3. Loupiac – Bordeaux (35/50 km - 20/30 miles)
Today you will discover the Sauternes region, where sweet dessert wines are made. You start by enjoying the view from Sainte-Croix du Mont before having a look at the grave of painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The then route follows the winding banks of the Ciron River, whose icy waters flow into the warmer waters of the Garonne. Once back on board, you will travel along the Garonne River towards the enchanting city of Bordeaux, reaching the passage of the Stone Bridge and the pier in the city center, facing the region’s most prestigious panorama : the “Port de la Lune” with its sumptuous eighteenth-century façades; The Pont de Pierre, the Place de la Bourse and the Quai des Chartrons.

    4. Bordeaux (15 km - 10 miles)
Bordeaux is a UNESCO world heritage for a reason. The list of buildings, place and hidden gems is worth seeing : Walk into the city via La Porte Cailhau, the royal entrance. Worth seeing is the Capuchine Market (perhaps with tastings of wine and oysters), the basilica, the Pont de Pierre, the first bridge of the city, which was built back in the day on Napoleons orders. Take time to ride through the newly opened Cité du Vin, Chaban Delmas bridge and Darwin ecosystem, a refurbished factory where you will enjoy the view of the Quais, drinking a good coffee in a tree-filled place.
A wonderful city to explore by bike or on foot. Many opportunities for shopping, souvenirs, food and wine tastings.
And for bike challengers who want to ride a long loop, the Roger Lapébie’s cycling lane will take you to Créon and Sauveterre-en-Guyenne, in the Entre-Deux-Mers wine region.

    5. Bordeaux – Bourg (40 km - 25 miles)
Today you arrive in one of the most famous wine regions of the world. Quickly you will get to the Château Lamothe Bergeron.  The most famous vineyards are: Maucaillou, Poujeaux Rauzan Ségla Palmer, Issan, Priorat Lichine, Kirwan and the Château Margaux. They offer many opportunities for a stop, with or without wine tasting. You also have the opportunity to extend today’s trip to Pauillac. You will pass by many vineyards, Chateaux Moutin Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Lynch-Bages, Cos d’Estournel, Pontet Canet, Pichon Longueville and other classified Grands Crus Lagen. A romantic route will be traveled in the evening on the MS Bordeaux. We will move further to Bourg- sur-Gironde, little village built on a rocky promontory that overlooks the small harbour and offers you a breath-taking panorama on the estuary.

    6. Bourg –  Libourne (25/40 km - 15/35 miles)
This part of the trip offers views on endless vineyards, garnished with many castles. Beautiful and romantic is the church of Bayon. You have the opportunity to visit some of the castles in the area, such as Tayac, Eyquem Monconseil-Gazin, Marquis de Vauban or others. At the corner of the beautiful, quiet Corniche Street, which leads along the mouth of the river, lies the ruin of the gallo-roman villa in Plassac. You soon will reach the Citadel of Blaye, also an UNESCO world heritage. Take your time for a tour. Back in Bourg, you may enjoy another small trip through the city and look forward to the sundowner on board of the MS Bordeaux. In the evening, the MS Bordeaux will sail to Libourne.

    7. Libourne – Saint Emilion – Libourne (20/45 km -15/30 miles)
Today's exploration will allow you to discover Libourne, and well-known vineyards of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol . In Saint-Emilion, you will visit this stunning medieval UNESCO World Heritage village, with surrounding vineyards of the same name. Panoramas are unique here. The Monolithic Church in the centre of the town is a monument not to be missed.
Your ride will continue on small picturesque back roads. Along the way, you will see some of the classified and famous Châteaux and their famous wines, such as Angelus and its special bells, Beauséjour, Ausone, Cheval Blanc, La Dominique, Trottevieille, Gaubert, Barde-Haut, Clos La Madeleine, Bel Air Monange, Laroque, Fombrauge, Grand Corbin, Gazin and Petrus, Petit Village, Nenin.

    8. Libourne
After your last breakfast on board it will be time to disembark.
Disembarking will take place 9.00-9.30am, taking an (optional) bus to the train station of Bordeaux.

Due to organisational reasons, weather conditions or warnings issued by local authorities, the itinerary may be subject to some changes before and/or during the holiday. Issues with high and low water, as well as logistic obstacles such as officially ordered - previously not announced - repair work on locks or bridges can modify some of the daily stretches or overnight stays and may even request a transfer by bus. These decisions are only taken by the boat’s captain.

Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend this tour. The staff on board could not have been nicer. Guests change with each group, of course, but I met a lot of nice people who like active vacations, as I do. The public spaces were great for mingling indoors in the lounge or at the bar, as well as outdoors on the top deck.

Bella esperienza bici & boat, specialmente per appassionati del vino e delle degustazioni.
Sarebbe stata carina una tappa sull’oceano
