Austria, Hungary, Slovakia / Danube cycle path

From Passau to Budapest on the MS Primadonna

If you wish to try an easy bike tour but you don’t want to give up the comfort, this is the holiday for you! MS Primadonna is a luxourious barge indeed, and the route is really simple and flat. You will ride your bike along the Danube cycle path, passing through three capital cities and wonderful landscapes. And if you feel tired, you can relax on board of your floating hotel!
  • Day by Day

    1° Passau – Schlögen

Your boat  MS Primadonna will be ready to embark at 4 pm at the Passau dockig area, right  at the confluence of three rivers:  Inn, Ilz and Danube. You can book a private transfer to the boat from either the car park at 4 pm or the railway station at 4.45 pm.

If you have time for a stroll before embarking, we suggest a visit to the town cathedral, hosting the biggest organ in the world and the majestic fortress Veste Oberhaus, from which you can enjoy a superb view of the city. Welcome dinner will be on board and navigation to Schlögen.

    2° Schlögen – Linz – Tulln (55 km)

You will wake up to the famous Schlögen Danube Loop, one of the most pictoresque places of the whole tour. Get ready to start cycling to the Baroque city of Aschach up to Ottensheim, where you can admire its castle and medieval market.

Today’s destination is Linz, a cultural and modern city. Visit the baroque-style old town with the main square, the Martinkirche, the house where Mozart composed his Linzer Symphonie. Have a walk in the botanic garden, featuring over 10,000 arboreal species. In the evening cruise to Tulln.

    3° Tulln – Vienna – Komárno (35/55 km)

Part of the morning will be dedicated to visit Tulin, known for its Egon Schiele museum, hosting the famous expressionist painter’s art works and for the flower gardens renowned in the whole country. You will then start cycling towards the Austrian capital. Once there, don’t be afraid of traffic because the main attractions such as St.Stephen’s cathedral and the imperial palace can be reached by bike. After dinner, if you wish, there will be the opportunity to have a scenic bus tour (included) of the city by night. At 11 pm the Primadonna will start sailing towards Komárno, in Slovakia.

    4° Komárno  – Budapest (55 km)

Komárno is a special place because it has a twin on the Hungarian side of the river: Komarom. From here you will continue on the left bank of the Danube, cycling through some cute villages, before reaching Esztergom, the city of Bishops and kings. Also known as ‘the royal city’ is worth a visit to the historic city centre and its catholic cathedral of Our Mother. In the evening cruise to Budapest.

    5° Budapest – Bratislava (25 km)

The morning will be dedicated to a 3 and a half hours cruise through Budapest, so that you can better admire the Magyar capital from the Danube.

You’ll have the whole afternoon to cycle through the streets of Budapest and reach Margaret Island, the 8 km long city park hosting the castle. In the evening the boat will sail towards Bratislava.

    6° Bratislava – Krems (35 km).

Today you will have the opportunity to visit the third capital of this tour: Bratislava, dominated by its castle on the hill towering over the Old city.

Don’t miss St. Martin’s cathedral, where Hungarian kings used to be crowned for over three centuries. You will cycle to Davin castle, Slovakia’s national monument and then to Schloß Hof , Empress Maria Theresa of Austria’s castle. The boat will be waiting for you and then you will start sailing towards Krems.

    7° Krems – Passau (50 km).

Welcome to the beautiful Wachau Calley! This is the most evocative stretch of the Danube river, weaving into green hills covered in vineyards and small ancient villages. You will pass through Dürnstein and its dark castle and then Willendorf, where the famous primitive statuette named Venus of Willendorf was found. Past Spitz you will reach Melk and its baroque abbey. After the visit you will reach Pöchlarn, where the barge will be waiting for you to then cruise on to Passau in the evening.

    8° Passau.

Arrival in Passau at about  8 am. After breakfast disembarkation between 8.45 and 10 am. There will be a bus transfer to the railway station or the car park in Passau (if reserved). End of tour.

The itinerary may be subject to unexpected changes before and/or during your holiday due to unforseable circimstances such as: extreme weather conditions, unannounced road or repair works or law enforcements.

  • Route profile

The cycle path along the Danube is one of the most famous bike routes in Europe, thanks to the services that are offered along the way and because it is really very easy, completely flat and consisting in paved bike lanes or secondary roads. The only thing you might want to do is find out in advance which side of the river the town you want to visit is on. In fact, bridges and ferries are not always present.

The route from Vienna to Budapest does not have the same characteristics. The proper bike path only exists in the Austrian part of the route, until Bratislava. The Slovakian and Hungarian stretches consists mainly in secondary roads with low but fast traffic. Please always cycle in single file. On the other hand, road signs are not frequent on this route, but it won’t be difficult to find the right way using your map. The route  also presents some ups and downs, but the stretches have been studied in order to offer you the easiest options. Don’t forget that, if you feel tired, you can stay on board of the barge!
