Crossing two countries by boat

This tour will lead you from the capital of Holland, Amsterdam through the Belgian pearls: Gent and Antwerp all the way to the fascinating Bruges. Aboard Magnifique II, III, IV

    1. Amsterdam - Vianen
Embarkation and check-in is within 2 p.m., where your crew for the week will be waiting to welcome you on board. At around 2 p.m. the ship will depart from Amsterdam for Vianen, a small, fortified village on the Lek River.

    2. Vianen - Kinderdijk - Dordrecht (30/55 km)
After breakfast you will cycle along a picturesque route to Schoonhoven - nicknamed “Silver City" - a city renowned for its talented silver smiths since the 17th century. Along the way as you pass through the Alblasserwaard region of Holland you will come to Kinderdijk, a village famous for its impressive row of 19 large windmills – one of which you can visit – which have a UNESCO cultural heritage listing. From nearby Alblasserdam you will take the “Waterbus”, a fast ferry, that will take and your bike you in approx. 10 minutes to Dordrecht, one of the oldest towns in Holland.

    3. Dordrecht - Willemstad - Bergen op Zoom (40/50 km)
During breakfast the barge will sail to Willemstad where you will start your cycling day. Your bicycle ride goes to Tholen, once was an island in the middle of the large Zeeland streams, where many people fished for their living. Nowadays Tholen is connected to the mainland in various ways. Then you cycle on to the destination of this trip, Bergen op Zoom, a historic fortified town that once lay on the open waters of the Oosterschelde

    4. Bergen op Zoom - Kreekrak - Antwerp (20/35 km)
Enjoy a small bike ride through the beautiful “Wouwse Plantage” surrounding Bergen op Zoom and then in the early afternoon board the ship which will sail to the port city of Antwerp, situated on the river Schelde. Antwerp is famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and is a city with a long list of attractions including: the City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period.

    5. Antwerp - St. Amands (35/50 km)
Today’s tour will see you cycle out of Antwerp on a beautiful cycle path alongside the picturesque tidal Schelde River to St Amands – depending on tides - your home for the night. There is only one way to describe the landscape around the Schelde and that is “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour.

    6. St Amands - Ghent (50 km)
Today you will continue to follow the river Schelde to Ghent where the barge will moor for the night at a lock in the suburb of Merelbeke. Ghent is a lively university city that boasts a rich history. Since Roman times Ghent’s position at the junction of Leie and Schelde Rivers ensured its success as a trading port. In total the city features an Opera House, 18 museums, more than 100 churches and over 400 historical buildings. Major attractions are St. Bavo Cathedral where a number of masterpieces of medieval art including the world famous ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ by Jan van Eyck are kept and the 91-metre-tall belfry of Ghent, one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city centre.

    7. Ghent – Bruges (20/45 km)
Today you will pedal from Ghent through the beautiful Flemish countryside of western Flanders to Bruges, widely described as the “Venice of the North”. The city attracts more than two million visitors every year who come for the ambience of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical centre. An outstanding example of a medieval settlement from the Middle Ages, Bruges has managed to maintain its historical fabric as it has evolved over the centuries, with the result that today the city’s original Gothic constructions form an integral part of the town's identity. While you are here you can visit one of Bruges many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café.

    8. Bruges
Disembarkation after breakfast around 9:30 am and end of tour.

During breakfast the barge will sail to Tholen where you will start your cycling day by visiting the “Wouwse Plantage” forest. Another attraction on the day is the impressive Kreekrak lock. After once again meeting up with the Fluvius you will finish your day by sailing to the port city of Antwerp which is situated on the river Schelde. Antwerp is famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and has many attractions that include: the City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period, the historical City Square Grote Market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral and the medieval Steen Castle. Today’s tour will see you cycle out of Antwerp on a beautiful cycle path along the picturesque tidal Schelde River to Dendermonde, your home for the night. There is only one way to describe the landscape around the Schelde and that is “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour.

    5. Dendermonde - Ghent (50 km)

Today you will continue to follow the river Schelde to Ghent where the ship will moor for the night at a lock in a suburb of town. Ghent is a lively university city that boasts a rich history. The city’s position at the junction of Leie and Schelde Rivers has meant it to be a major trading port since Roman times. 6. Ghent - Bruges (45 km)

Today you will pedal from Ghent through the beautiful Flemish countryside of western Flanders to Bruges, widely described as the “Venice of the North”. The city attracts more than two million visitors every year who come for the ambience of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical centre. While you are here you can visit one of Bruges many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café.

    7. Bruges round tour (40/50 km)

Your final day of cycling takes you along a quiet canal and past beautiful poplar trees through an attractive polder landscape (a polder is a low-lying tract of land enclosed by embankments) dotted with small farm houses to the North Sea coast. Here if you want you can swim in the sea along an inviting sandy beach, visit any one of numerous cafés and see the attractive dune landscape. On the return ride to Bruges you will cycle along a small picturesque canal.

    8. Bruges

Disembarkation after breakfast around 9:30 am and end of tour.

Due to organisational reasons, weather conditions or provisions issued by local authorities, the itinerary may be subject to some changes before and/or during the holiday. Issues with high and low water, as well as logistic obstacles such as officially ordered - previously not announced - repair work on locks or bridges can modify some of the daily stretches or overnight stays and may even request a transfer by bus. These decisions are only taken by the barge’s captain.

  • Route profile

The Netherlands are the country of bicycles, mainly due to its flat landscape, under the north sea level. The cycle path network, almost entirely paved, is very widespread and sign posted with white and red signs and with small stumps called “mushrooms”, numbered and signalled on the maps.

It is easy to cycle in Belgium as well, especially if you ride your bike along the flat maritime region. Belgium has recently unified its bike paths net with the Dutch one.

Note that sometimes the bike lanes are separated from the street only by a red line, so please pay attention. Wind and rain are very frequent in this country and they might make your cycling difficult at times. It won’t be hard to deal with this tour, but you will need to be a bit trained in order to stay a whole week on the saddle!

  • How to get there

The precise embarkation point will be written in the Final Tour Details.

    By plane

The best international airport to use for this trip is Amsterdam Schiphol.

In order to get to the embarkation point you need to leave from Amsterdam central station by taking the train directly at the airport. You can purchase the tickets at the cashiers, which usually accept debit and credit cards. The journey takes about 20 minutes, the cost is about € 5.

    By train

The main train station is Amsterdam Centraal Station.

    By car

Parking in the centre of Amsterdam is very expensive, we suggest parking on the outskirt of  the city.
