IN BRIEF
The Queen of cycle routes
The Danube Cycle Route (Donauradweg) is undoubtedly the most popular route in Europe. It consists of three main segments: the German section, stretching from Donaueschingen to Passau; the classic Austrian route, stretching from Passau to Vienna; and the route from Vienna to Belgrade, passing through Budapest. The bike path begins at the Danube’s source in the Black Forest and follows the river’s course. The stages are well-marked and away from traffic. The terrain is flat or slightly downhill. The most popular section is the Austrian route, offering over 300 kilometers of beautiful scenery, rich history, and delicious cuisine. This route appeals to everyone, even those who have never gone on a cycling vacation before.
To know
A bike path for everyone
Is this your first bike trip? If so, the Danube Cycle Path is the perfect choice. It’s one of the most accessible cycle paths in Europe. The stages are easy and flat, and there are numerous amenities along the way. The Danube is your faithful cycling companion, always nearby to show you the way—although the signage is so precise that it’s hard to get lost!
The sections to ride
The most famous section of the Danube Cycle Path runs from Passau, a German city right on the border, to Vienna, the elegant Austrian capital. Every year, 680,000 cyclists from all over the world cross the finish line here! Castles, abbeys, and vineyards frame each stage of the journey.
But the great Danube extends beyond the Austrian borders, through the Slovakian and Hungarian countryside, and on to Budapest. Be sure to stop in beautiful Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

When is the best time to ride the Danube Cycle Path?
Every month from April to October is good for cycling on the trail. In spring and fall, you can enjoy cooler temperatures; in summer, you can enjoy longer days. If you choose to travel by bike and barge, cabin availability is limited, so it’s best to book at least a couple of months in advance.

You will pass through majestic and elegant cities such as Bratislava, Vienna, and Budapest. You will also see the romantic landscapes of the Wachau Valley among the vineyards. Not to mention the picturesque Schlögen Bight.
Are the tours guided or self-guided?
The Danube cycling tours are self-guided. On board you will find maps and route descriptions to cycle at your own pace. An English-speaking tour leader is also on board throughout the trip, running a daily evening briefing on the following day’s stage, sharing tips and information about the route and acting as your point of reference whenever you need one.
How does it work with meals?
In general, breakfast and dinner are served on board, while lunch is a packed lunch prepared with ingredients from the kitchen on board. As meal arrangements can vary by tour, we recommend checking the specific tour page for full details on what is and is not included.
