IN BRIEF

The Queen of Cycle Routes

The Danube Cycle Route (Donauradweg) is undoubtedly the most popular in Europe. It consists of three main segments: the German section, which runs from Donaueschingen to Passau; the classic Austrian route, which stretches from Passau to Vienna; and the route from Vienna to Belgrade, passing through Budapest. The bike path begins at the source of the Danube in the Black Forest and follows its course. The stages are well-marked and away from traffic. The terrain is flat or slightly downhill. The most popular section is the Austrian one, which offers over 300 kilometers of beautiful nature, rich history, and delightful cuisine. This route appeals to everyone, even those who have never gone on a cycling vacation before.

To know

A bike path for everyone

Is this your first bike trip? If so, the Danube Cycle Path is the perfect choice. It’s one of the most accessible cycle paths in Europe. The stages are easy and flat, and there are numerous amenities along the way. The Danube is your faithful cycling companion, always nearby to show you the way—although the signage is so precise that it’s hard to get lost!
For the more athletic, we’ve lengthened the daily stages to add a few extra challenges to the enjoyment of riding this unmissable cycle route!

The sections to ride

The most famous section of the Danube Cycle Path runs from Passau, a German city right on the border, to Vienna, the elegant Austrian capital. Every year, 680,000 cyclists from all over the world cross the finish line here! Castles, abbeys, and vineyards frame each stage of the journey.
But the great Danube extends beyond the Austrian borders, through the Slovakian and Hungarian countryside, and on to Budapest. Be sure to stop in beautiful Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.
