IN BRIEF

A slow journey through history and culture

France is home to nearly 8,000 km of navigable waterways, linking villages, châteaux and historic towns through some of Europe’s most beautiful landscapes. Rivers and canals wind through regions as diverse as sun-drenched Provence, the rolling vineyards of Burgundy and the effervescent countryside of Champagne, all of them perfect for slow travel by bike and boat.

What is a bike and barge holiday in France?

A bike and barge tour is a cycling holiday where your accommodation travels with you. You sleep aboard a comfortable riverboat with private cabins, a dining room and a sun deck, and each morning you set off on your bike to explore the region. The daily stages are designed to be enjoyable for cyclists of all levels, and an electric bike is always an option if you want a little extra help on longer stretches.

TO DISCOVER

Landscapes, history and wild nature

France offers an extraordinary variety of scenery along its waterways. In the south, Provence draws travellers with its storybook villages and remarkable Roman heritage, including the Pont du Gard aqueduct and the papal city of Avignon. Beyond the well-known sights, smaller places like Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and the riverside village of Vallabrègues offer a more intimate glimpse of French life.

Art cities and hidden gems

Further north, the landscape shifts entirely. In Burgundy, the barge follows the Yonne river through a region of abbeys, medieval towns and celebrated vineyards. In Champagne, pedalling along the Marne means cycling through the very vineyards that produce the world’s most famous sparkling wine.

Wild nature: flamingos, white horses and salt marshes

Where the Rhône meets the Mediterranean, the Camargue is a vast wetland of lagoons and salt flats, home to pink flamingos, black bulls and the iconic white horses that roam freely across the plain. Cycling through this wild, flat terrain with nothing but sky and water on all sides is an experience unlike anywhere else in France.

Tours

Provence and Camargue (1 tour)

One of the best-loved areas of France, Provence and the Camargue offer a fascinating mix of Roman heritage, wild nature and iconic landscapes. From Avignon to Aigues-Mortes, treasures await at every stage: Arles, Nimes, the wild horses of the Camargue, and the places dear to Van Gogh. This is one of Girolibero’s most established and popular tours, and the crew takes particular pride in the on-board cuisine, turning every dinner into a taste of the region itself.

Paris and Champagne (1 tour)

Board a riverboat and follow the Marne River through the heart of one of France’s most celebrated regions. The Champagne countryside surprises with its bucolic landscapes, pretty villages and unexpected cultural treasures, and there is never a shortage of excellent Brie and fine bubbles along the way. A journey that lingers in the memory long after the last glass!

Northern Burgundy (1 tour)

Spend a week in Northern Burgundy, known as the “Land of Good Living”, and you will quickly understand why it earned that name. The route mostly follows the peaceful Yonne river, with occasional detours inland to discover hilltop towns and villages that reward the extra effort. Good wine, good food and beautiful scenery make this one of France’s most satisfying cycling destinations.

Moselle Cycle Path (1 tour)

Follow the Moselle river from the elegant French city of Metz to the fairytale German town of Cochem, cycling through one of Europe’s most scenic river valleys. The route passes terraced vineyards, medieval castles and charming villages on both banks, crossing effortlessly between France and Germany. A journey that combines outstanding natural beauty with a rich and layered cultural heritage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A bike and barge holiday combines cycling with life aboard a riverboat. Each morning, you set off on your bike to explore the region, following a tour leader or cycling at your own pace. In the evening, the barge is moored at a new stop, where you return for dinner and an overnight stay. The cabin is yours for the whole week.

Depending on the route, you can explore Roman heritage sites like the Pont du Gard and the theatres of Arles, the papal city of Avignon and other iconic spots in Provence, the medieval streets of Auxerre, the vineyards of Champagne and the legendary Avenue de Champagne in Épernay, the wild landscapes of the Camargue with its flamingos and white horses, and the scenic Moselle valley between Metz and Cochem. Each tour is designed to include both well-known highlights and lesser-known villages that are best discovered by bike.

Most of our France bike and barge tours are guided, meaning a tour leader travels with the group and leads the daily cycling stages. The Provence and Camargue tour is also available as a self-guided option, where you cycle independently using detailed maps and a roadbook.

In general, breakfast and dinner are served on board, while lunch is a packed lunch prepared with ingredients from the kitchen on board. As meal arrangements can vary by tour, we recommend checking the specific tour page for full details on what is and is not included.

Our France bike and barge tours are designed to be accessible to a wide range of cyclists. No special training is required, though a reasonable level of general fitness will help you enjoy the experience more. We invite you to verify on the tour page the specific characteristics of the route.

If you have any doubts, an electric bike is always available as an option.

Yes. Electric bikes are available on all our France tours and are a popular choice, especially for those who want to enjoy the scenery without worrying about distance or fatigue.

It depends on the trip. Guest numbers range from 20 to over 40, depending on the boat. The average age tends to be between 50 and 80, though families with children and younger cyclists also join us in peak season. Each trip page includes a full description of the boat, including the maximum number of guests.

Our France bike and barge tours run from March to October. Late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September and October) are particularly pleasant, with mild temperatures, fewer crowds and beautiful light. July and August are the warmest months, so you can opt for an electric bike, which makes pedalling effortlessly enjoyable even on the hottest days.

Sure. Solo travellers are welcome on bike and barge tours. A single cabin supplement applies, as cabins are normally priced for double occupancy.

Every bike tour includes: overnight on board, breakfast and other meals (depending on the tour),route materials or tour leader and multilingual assistance. Depending on the trip, you can add extra services to your quote, such as bike rental, meals, extra nights and transfers.

We strongly recommend it. A good policy should cover medical expenses, trip cancellation and cycling-specific incidents. Travel insurance is not included in the tour price and must be arranged independently before your trip.

We recommend booking as early as possible, as places on the barge are limited. Many of our most popular tours sell out months in advance. Last-minute availability does occasionally come up, so it is always worth checking.
