In brief

Cycling the Adige, from South Tyrol to Verona

Let us take you on one of northern Italy’s most rewarding cycling routes: around 300 km of paths connecting the Dolomites to the Venetian plains, following the Adige river from Bolzano all the way to Verona. The best part? The route runs mostly downhill, making it a natural choice for cyclists of all levels, including families with children. Along the way, you will pass through quiet villages, picturesque castles, apple orchards as far as the eye can see, terraced vineyards, and the sparkling shores of Lake Garda. Most of the route runs on traffic-free cycle paths, so you can simply enjoy the ride.

TO KNOW

Romantic cities, great wines, and architecture

As if pedalling through the Dolomites isn’t enough for your daily dose of romance, the route takes you through Verona — the city of Romeo and Juliet — and all the way to Venice. The food and wine scene more than keeps up with the scenery: light whites from Lake Garda, bold reds from the Valpolicella hills, and prestigious mountain wines from Alto Adige. In short, the place to be if you enjoy good food and don’t mind a glass of wine! Architecture lovers won’t be disappointed either: from the striking contemporary buildings of Trentino Alto Adige to the timeless Palladian villas of the Veneto, there’s plenty to admire between one pedal stroke and the next.

Organized bike tours

Tours

From the Alps to the Adriatic Sea

Few things are as rewarding as cycling through spectacular mountain scenery, and it gets even better with places like Innsbruck and Bolzano along the way. Head further south and the landscape opens up to Lake Garda and the Venice Lagoon — a journey from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea, through some of northern Italy’s most breathtaking landscapes and historic cities, all at the rhythm of the pedals.

From the Alps to Lake Garda

Cycling from Bolzano to Verona along the mostly traffic-free Adige Cycle Path, you will follow the sound of the river through vineyards, apple orchards, and the elegant cities of Trentino Alto Adige — Merano, Trento, and beyond. Want to extend the adventure? Lake Garda, Verona, and Mantua are all within easy reach, each one well worth the detour.

FAQ

Our promise to those who travel with us is this: cycle easy, travel light. These words capture the essence of what we do. If you choose a self-guided cycling tour, you follow the stages at your own pace with route maps; if you join a group tour, just follow your guide.

The River Adige cycle route covers approximately 300 km from the Resia Pass to Verona. With Girolibero, you can choose the section that best suits your time and fitness level.

The most popular starting point is Bolzano, in the heart of South Tyrol. Those looking for a longer challenge can begin at the Resia Pass, home to the iconic submerged bell tower of Lake Resia, or even further north in Innsbruck. The classic route ends in Verona, one of Italy’s most romantic cities. Some of our tours continue beyond Verona to Venice, combining the cycle path with quiet country roads through the Venetian plains.

The route is at its best from April to October. Spring brings mild temperatures and stunning blossom along the apple orchards of the Adige Valley. Summer is ideal for long days in the saddle, though July and August can be warm in the lower sections around Verona. September is perhaps the most rewarding month: the harvest season is in full swing, the light turns golden, and the crowds have thinned out nicely.

On self-guided bike tours, we provide everything you need to find your way: detailed maps and route descriptions, in printed or digital format depending on the trip. Some trips also include the Ride with GPS app, with GPS tracks and route content, available offline too. On guided group tours, your guide takes care of everything — you just follow along.

bsolutely. The Adige cycle path is one of the most beginner-friendly routes in Italy: it runs mostly downhill from north to south, with long flat sections and very little traffic. South Tyrol in particular has an excellent network of well-maintained, traffic-free cycle lanes. We also offer a dedicated family tour with short daily stages, children’s bikes, and family-friendly accommodation throughout.

The route is packed with highlights from start to finish. In South Tyrol, don’t miss the iconic submerged bell tower of Lake Resia, the thermal gardens of Merano, and the lively old town of Bolzano. Further south, Trento’s elegant Renaissance squares and Rovereto’s contemporary art museum are well worth a stop. The route ends in Verona — the city of Romeo and Juliet — where a well-deserved glass of Valpolicella awaits.

Every morning you leave your luggage at the reception desk and we take care of transporting it to your next accommodation. We will provide you with luggage labels and drop-off times. During the day, you can carry your essentials in the side bag provided with your rental bike. The service is always included in the price. Cycling light makes all the difference.

Accommodation varies depending on the trip. For tours on this destination, we normally book hotels and family-run hotels. We handpick every property with care, favouring those conveniently located along the route. Breakfast is always included. For full details, check the “Comfort” section on the trip page.

Every bike tour includes: handpicked accommodation with breakfast, luggage transfer, route materials and multilingual assistance. Depending on the trip, you can add extra services to your quote, such as bike rental, meals, extra nights and transfers.

From the moment you book until you’re back home, we are here for any question or concern. On self-guided trips, it is good to be prepared for the small mechanical hiccups that come with cycling — that’s why we provide a full repair kit with everything you need to handle a flat tire on your own. For anything else, our support line is available 7 days a week, from 8 AM to 8 PM.

We strongly recommend it. A good policy should cover medical expenses, trip cancellation and cycling-specific incidents. Travel insurance is not included in the tour price and must be arranged independently before your trip.

It is simple: choose your trip, get your quote, and book directly online by filling in the required details and paying a deposit by credit card or bank transfer. Within 3 working days we will send you a confirmation email or an update. If you have any questions or doubts, get in touch. We are available by phone or email.
